Margaritas, Malibus, Mojitos… Oh My!

It’s that time of year again folks. Time to bring out the bathing suits, beach umbrellas, sunscreen, and suit cases! Summer is a great season for many of us. The kids are home, vacations are planned, and peach pies are made. However, let’s be realistic about going on vacation. You and your family will most likely be going to restaurants and drinking alcoholic, sugary beverages; going to the gym might not be the first activity on your mind… and that is okay! No one expects you to pack avocados, Greek yogurt, and protein shakes in your carry-on. It’s important to treat yourself occasionally, but it doesn’t have to come at the expense of your health.
Some have anxiety when leaving for vacation due to a fear of flying, worrying about whether or not you remembered to lock the front door, or worse, what if the burners were left on. Even I get anxious about when I will be able to fit in physical activity, and how much weight I will potentially gain by the end of the trip. Here are some tips for maintaining your weight, and staying healthy throughout your vacation. Your first goal should be to maintain at least 50% of your regular fitness routine. It will be beneficial and motivating to book a hotel that has a fitness facility. It is important to remember that any physical activity is better than nothing at all.
Another health tip when traveling is to find restaurants that are within walking distance of your hotel. Why take a cab when you can enjoy a nice evening walk with your family in the cool air? In addition to some family bonding, walking after eating a meal is a great way to lower your blood sugar levels. The next health tip would be to incorporate physical activity into every day. Whether that involves hiking, biking, playing beach volleyball with your kids, taking the hotel stairs instead of the elevator, or walking around airline terminals while waiting for your flight to board; physical activity is crucial for health benefits! So this summer don’t accept unhealthy habits during your vacation, fight it, and return home feeling guilt-free!
